Are you ready for Back to School?

Some kids are already back at school (like mine…yayyyyy) and some will be starting back in the next couple of weeks. I don’t know about all of you but this has been the shortest summer ever.

As they head back here are some tips to share with your child to help make this year a success.

1.Go over their calander, get them a planner and teach them to write down EVERYTHING. If your kids are like mine after school activities can be quite overwhelming. If they begin planning their days, tests, practices, SAT test days, as well as dentist appointments they will learn to better organize their time.

2. Make a goal sheet and create goals and expectations for the new year.

3. Teach them to study anywhere, in the car, at a siblings practice or at the kitchen table!!! It’s always ideal to study in a small quiet space, however this does not always happen. So teaching them to concentrate in the less than ideal situations promotes adaptation.

4. Start small when working on big projects doing a little bit at a time.

5. Create routines- dinnertime, study time, downtime, and bedtime. Routines keep you organized.

6. You can buy them all the organizational tools possible, if it gets too complicated it wont work. Keep it simple. Red folders for Math, blue folders for English -BASIC

7. Use free time wisely- whether it is at home or if a teacher has finished with a lecture; don’t let it go to waste. START THE HOMEWORK!!

8. Check grades regularly (make this part of your routine) don’t let bad grades accumulate; after ONE bad grade encourage them speak to their teacher about makeups extra work and most importantly tutoring. This builds responsibility and independence.

9. Find a friend. I don’t know how many times my kids have told me they don’t remember the assignment or they forgot their book at school. Easy solution- ask someone from you class. It would be if they at least knew one persons phone number. This is now a requirement in my house.

10. Prepare clothes for the next day and preplan breakfast lunch and dinner to save some time while you are running out the door.

11. Set all clocks 10 minute forward

12. Set, enforce and stick to expectations, rules, chores etc…this is the last warning needs to be the last warning.

Try them and send me your feedback.

Wishing everyone a SAFE and SUCCESSFUL Back to School.
