STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (some use the acronym STEAM- arts). According to “The Benefits of Teaching STEAM Lessons” , an article published by Concordia University in Portland Oregon “ [STEM] increases critical thinking ,exposes students to creative process, offers meaningful collaboration, provides a new way to problem solve, promotes hands on activity, encourages girls to explore [STEM] fields, and shows a different way to value the arts.
It is not enough to assume that your child’s school has STEM programs, ASK. Introducing STEM/STEAM activities sounds more intimidating than it actually is. Even about 30 minutes a day of simple activities such as block play can improve math competency. Building towers or other activities using objects such as popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and paper clips are also considered as ST(E)M related. The internet is full of free STEAM/STEM activities you can safely do at home. Be involved in your childs learning process. Working on projects together may be one of the most rewarding memories shared between you and your child.
